Participation: The course requires the active participation of all students. Active participation means more than simply coming to class. It means coming to the seminar with notes on the assigned readings and ready to contribute to the discussion by asking questions, commenting on the readings and engaging with peers and your TA. To begin, you should always summarize the readings and follow the instructions in the reading schedule for that week. In order to participate you must be present. Students who miss more than three seminars without documented medical reasons might have difficulty completing the course. You will not, however, receive a passing participation grade for attendance alone. A progress participation grade will be given at midterm. Due date: weeks 2-12.
Short writing assignments: These are one-page writing assignments to be handed in at the beginning of seminar. Details will be announced in the first seminar. These assignments will not be accepted late, and if you miss the seminar that week, you will receive a zero on your writing assignment. Due Dates: January 19 (5%), February 2 (2%), March 2 (3%).
Quizzes: There will be two true/ false and multiple-choice quizzes related to course material. These quizzes will be conducted online. Each quiz is worth 5% for a total of 10%. Quizzes will cover material presented in lecture, readings and seminars (including library research instruction).
To write each quiz, please go to https://learning.library.brocku.ca and log-in using your Brock portal ID and the course password. The course password for VISA 1Q99 will be distributed in the 2nd lecture.
Each quiz will be taken online and you must complete it before the date and time listed below in order to receive credit for it.
Quiz #1: opens January 19, 5pm, closes January 26, midnight
Quiz #2: opens March 9, 5 pm, closes March 16, midnight
**You are strongly encouraged to complete the quizzes well ahead of the deadline as problems with log-in or internet access are not considered valid excuses for missing a quiz.**
Annotated bibliography: For this assignment, you will choose an artist, art movement or work of art. You will narrow a broad topic to a manageable topic (that could be the topic of a 7-page undergraduate paper) and will then develop a research question and tentative thesis about your topic. You will conduct research in the library and will gather a number of different types of sources. Your annotated bibliography will contain an entry on each source, in Chicago Humanities Style and arranged alphabetically. Each source will be annotated, which means that you will write a brief summary and will provide an assessment of the source, in paragraph form. Each annotation will be 150-200 words long. Your annotated bibliography will contain 7 sources, including at least two journal articles, at least 2 essays from books or entire books published by an academic press, and only one Internet source. More information will be given in class. Due date: March 16
Midterm test: The midterm test will take place in the lecture and will consist of short answer questions and definitions of terms. The short answer questions will be answered in paragraph form and will cover material from lectures, seminars and the readings. When writing about terms, you must define the word and explain its importance for the history of art, using full sentences. Due date: in lecture, February 23
Final Exam: This will take place during the exam period. The format will be discussed in the last class, but will likely include a combination of compare/contrast questions, definitions of terms and short essay questions. Due date: during the final exam period, TBD
